What is the difference between skimming and replastering?

Skimming is a thin finish coat applied over existing plaster or plasterboard to create a smooth surface ready for decorating. It works well when the underlying plaster is still sound and solid. Replastering means removing the old plaster completely and starting from scratch — this is needed when plaster is blown, damp damaged, crumbling or simply too old and uneven to skim over. We will tell you honestly which your walls need when we visit to quote.

How long does plaster take to dry before painting?

Fresh plaster typically takes between two and four weeks to dry fully before it is ready to paint, depending on the thickness of the coat, the temperature and how well ventilated the room is. A single skim coat will dry faster than a full backing coat and skim. You can usually tell it is ready when the plaster has turned from a dark pink to a uniform pale colour throughout. Painting too soon traps moisture and can cause the paint to peel.

How do I know if my plaster needs repairing or replacing?

Tap the wall with your knuckle — a hollow sound means the plaster has blown away from the wall behind it and needs replacing in that area. Hairline cracks can often be filled and skimmed over. Large cracks, bubbling paint, damp staining or sections that feel soft or crumbly usually mean the plaster underneath has failed and needs to come off. If you are unsure, we will assess it properly when we visit to quote and give you an honest view of what is actually needed.

How much does plastering cost in Essex?

The cost depends on the size of the room, the condition of the existing walls and what type of plastering work is needed. Skimming a single room is a very different job to a full house replaster from bare brick. We always visit first and give you a clear written quote before any work starts. There is no charge for the quote and no obligation to go ahead.

How do I prepare a room before a plasterer arrives?

Clear as much furniture as possible from the room and remove pictures, curtains and anything fixed to the walls. The more clear space we have, the faster and cleaner we can work. We will bring dust sheets to protect the floor and any remaining furniture. If sockets or switches need to be removed or isolated we will let you know in advance.

Do you plaster ceilings as well as walls?

Yes — ceiling plastering is one of the most common jobs we do across Essex. Whether it is a full skim, a repair after a leak or damage, or a replaster after removing artex, we leave ceilings smooth and ready to paint. We can also take care of the painting once the plaster has dried if you need a complete finish.
